As technology advances, people may spend more time on screens, which could be hazardous to their eyesight. Our eyes are glued to digital displays all day long, particularly since the lockdown began and life post that. In light of the fact that technology and people are now essentially interconnected, digital eye strain is becoming more likely.
We need to similarly sensitise the eye care category for long-term eyesight and avoid higher index spectacles with the multiple screens that enable our tech-centric culture. The constant moving, adapting, and concentrating of eyes when staring at the screen leads to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome.
Since practically everyone today is exposed to digital media, TSGE educates its students on the signs, causes, and remedies for digital eye strain
Causes
We are served news, entertainment, work, and educational information via screens. As a result, prolonged use of these media causes eye pain that results in blurry vision, eye burns, and eyes that are dry, scratchy, and inflamed. Digital eye strain is the medical name for this problem. Its effects also lead to the following issues:
- Fatigue –Eye fatigue brought on by prolonged use of digital devices.
- Headache –Persistent contact with light and sound.
- Neck and shoulder pain –Abnormal muscle stretch.
Symptoms
The following are additional effects of greater distress;
- Light sensitivity –The amount of light that impairs vision.
- Glare on digital display –An exaggerated imbalance between bright and dark on light sources.
- Nearsightedness& Farsightedness –Poor decision-making while recognising objects up close and far away.
- Unhealthy posture –Repeatedly shifting the alignment of one's seated position.
Tips
The only way to lessen the negative impact on eyesight is to regularly follow the correct eye care advice, as digital media has evolved into a necessity.
Work on your vision :
Keep in mind the 20-20-20 rule. Take the twenty-second break every twenty minutes to scan the display from a distance of twenty feet. As a result, there will be less chance of myopia and hyper-myopia.
Frequently break your gaze :
Minimizing the amount of time spent on screens and taking breaks frequently can lessen eye strain and weariness. This will moisturise the eyes and prevent allergic symptoms.
Make sure you're seated properly :
For the health of your neck and shoulders, sit straight with your head in the proper alignment. This can occasionally exercise tense muscles and provide relief for them.
On-device brightness adjustment :
Adjusting the device’s brightness setting is essential for controlling the rays that can harm the eyes. So, make the backdrop a lighter shade of the original or a cool grey.
Put on glasses if necessary :
If your vision is impaired, put on the appropriate glasses before looking at the screen. To preserve eye health, choose to have an eye exam once a year.
Healthy eating :
To improve eye health, make sure to eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. This may prevent eye-related issues like cataracts.
The Thakur School of Global Education recognises that children and technology are the way of the future. However, as it is a vital life skill, it is essential to teach children about balance in life. As a result, we establish appropriate boundaries so that students can succeed in raising their aspirations and attaining their goals in life.
